The namesake publicaton of the ‘Merhaba İzmir!’ exhibition, mounted as a result of the collaboration between the Arkas Art Center and the Ara Güler Museum, consists for the most part of photographs by Ara Güler of İzmir, the İzmir Agora and places in the surrounding area – Ephesus, Pergamon and the ancient city of Allianoi. The photographs, some of which are being put on view for the first time, document the changes that were taking place both in İzmir itself and in the ancient sites around it. Also included in the selection are Ara Güler’s much-loved photographs of Istanbul, important pieces of photo-journalism by him on the subjects of Aphrodisias, Mount Nemrut and Noah’s Ark, the various cameras he used throughout his career, his press cards, his rubber stamps and inkpads, some of his contact prints and mock-ups of books, and a selection of his portrait photographs.
