The ‘Hollows and Mounds: A Take On Göbeklitepe’ exhibition, organised as the result of a collaboration between the Ara Güler Museum and Leica Türkiye, takes as its main focus the Göbekli Tepe archaeological site. Through an agreement signed with the Turkish Ministry of Culture and Tourism and Doğuş Group in 2015, Doğuş Group became the official sponsor of the Göbekli Tepe Archaeological Site for 20 years. In 2018, the site was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List and 2019 was declared as the "Göbekli Tepe Year" by the Presidency of the Republic of Turkey.
On display for the first time in this exhibition are photographs, taken by Ara Güler in 1998 during a visit to the team investigating the site, that show the excavations in their early stages. Also on show are pieces of work in various media, all inspired by the area in question, by the contemporary artist Sinem Dişli. These include photographs, videos, paintings and installations under the general title ‘An Interpretation of History Through Water and Stone’; in them, the intention of the artist (who divides her time between Urfa, Istanbul and New York) is to offer an interpretation of our common history through the medium of the universal language of art.
Simultaneously with the showing of this exhibition, a book entitled Hollows and Mounds: A Take On Göbeklitepe is being published by Ara Güler Museum Publications. In it are articles on the work of Sinem Dişli by Dr. Christopher Lightfoot, Prof. Wendy M.K. Shaw, Doç. Dr. Ahmet A. Ersoy and İpek Ulusoy Akgül.
