Prepared by the Ara Güler Archives and Research Center. Aphrodisias is presented as a publication accompanying the second exhibition of the Ara Güler Museum.
Ara Güler first visits the village of Geyre through a fortuitous occasion in the late summer of 1958, working as a photojournalist for Hayat magazine. Setting out to photograph the Kemer Dam, Ara Güler works around the dam until the evening to capture it in the desired light. Following sunset he and the driver appointed by the governor’s office lose their way back and arrive at a settlement where electricity does not exist.
The very first photographs taken by Ara Güler of Geyre Village, now registered as the Archaeological Site of Aphrodisias, date to 1958. After this date, from the 1960’s onwards, Ara Güler repeatedly visits Geyre Village and Aphrodisias, documenting the transformation of the area from a settlement zone to a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Aphrodisias, one of the most important photo-reportage projects in Ara Güler's career, was first published in Architectural Review in 1961 and subsequently in many other important international journals.
