Ara Güler Museum Shop, Galataport Istanbul
‘The Shore’s Memory’ is a selection of the colour photographs in
Yitirilmiş Renkler (‘Vanished Colours’), a book published by Ara Güler
in 1995 that contained views of the Bosphorus and its shores – this being
a part of the city that immediately comes to mind when we think of
Istanbul – as well as scenes from everyday life on the waterfront. Also
on display under the title Bir Kitabın Anatomisi (‘The Anatomy of a
Book’) is a mock-up of Yitirilmiş Renkler, together with a detailed
account of how it was made.
Ara Güler invariably began the process of
publishing a book by putting together a mock-up of the finished product,
and the exhibition throws light on this aspect of his creative personality.
In it are presented scenes from Istanbul’s littoral, and the visitor follows
the progress of a day by the waterside, beginning with the first light of
dawn and ending at dusk.
