Ara Güler Museum
The use of the word ‘Miscellaneous’ in the title of this exhibition
reflects Ara Güler’s frequent use of it when labelling collections of
photographs of a particular subject in his archive. The exhibition
consists of 58 black-and-white photographs of Istanbul taken by Ara
Güler (a man described as ‘the Eye of Istanbul’), the Leica camera with
which he took them, a selection of the slides in his archive and the boxes
he kept them in, and samples of the contact prints he made during the
1950s and 1960s.
Also on view are the typewriter on which he typed his
short stories, the notebook in which he wrote his stories during his lycée
years, and a copy of the Haber newspaper in which one these stories –
İstanbul’da Sabah (‘Morning in Istanbul’) – was published.
