“Ara Güler’s Anatolia in Colour”, featuring colour photographs of renowned Turkish photojournalist Ara Güler, opens on July 11th at the Modern Greek Art Museum of Rhodes. The exhibition brings together a selection of photographs taken during Ara Güler’s extensive travels throughout Anatolia over several decades dating from 1957 to 2003. Celebrated for his black and white photographs, the exhibition underlines Ara Güler’s equal mastery of colour photography as well as his love for Anatolia and its people.

Established in 2016 through a collaboration between Doğuş Group and Ara Güler, the Ara Güler Museum aims to share the artist’s legacy with broad audiences both in Turkey and abroad. Doğuş Group—known for its long-standing support of numerous cultural and artistic social responsibility initiatives in Turkey—continues to safeguard and study Güler’s work through this dedicated institution.

The exhibition features 62 photographs by Ara Güler, taken during the years when colour photography started to gain recognition around the world—a shift that Güler closely followed as an international photojournalist. In this exhibition, the compositional element of colour stands out as the main thread that connects all four corners of Anatolia while his ability to capture the essence of his subjects creates a feeling of being independent of time and place. Nevertheless these photographs continue to reflect a familiar terrain and a recurring way of life today. These works were among photographs recently exhibited- some for the very first time - at the Ara Güler Museum in Istanbul. They now meet a new audience in Rhodes, the Ara Güler Museum’s first exhibition in Greece.
